I unplugged my microwave between uses for 2 weeks this April to see if it would cut my electric bill. This is what happened

For two weeks, I performed a tiny ritual every time I used the microwave.

Heat the food.

Open the door.

Take out the plate.

Then unplug the microwave.

I had become curious about one of those pieces of energy-saving advice that sounds almost unquestionably sensible: appliances continue drawing electricity when they are not being used, so unplug them and stop wasting power.

The microwave seemed like an obvious target.

Even when it wasn’t heating anything, its clock remained illuminated around the clock. That glowing display looked like visible proof that electricity was quietly leaking away.

So I decided to measure it.

I connected the microwave to an electricity monitor and watched what happened when the appliance was sitting idle.

The result?

About 3 watts.

That was the mysterious “phantom load” I had been worrying about.

Three watts.

Of course, three watts running continuously does eventually add up. Leave that standby load operating 24 hours a day for an entire year and it comes to roughly 26 kilowatt-hours.

At typical electricity prices, that translated to only a few dollars annually—around three dollars using the rate I was calculating with.

Technically, unplugging worked perfectly.

When the plug came out, standby consumption dropped to zero.

Victory.

Except it didn’t feel much like one.

The first annoyance appeared almost immediately.

The clock reset.

Every time I plugged the microwave back in, there it was again, blinking and waiting to be programmed. I could leave it unset, of course, but then I had traded a glowing clock for a permanently incorrect one.

Then there was the outlet itself.

Like many kitchen outlets used for appliances, mine was not positioned for repeated interaction. Reaching it meant maneuvering around things on the counter and stretching into an awkward space that clearly had not been designed for someone to access several times every day.

Making breakfast?

Unplug.

Reheating lunch?

Plug in.

Finished?

Unplug.

Heating leftovers at dinner?

Plug in again.

After a few days, the ritual started feeling absurdly large compared with the amount of energy being saved.

That was the most useful result of the experiment.

Not the three watts.

Perspective.

Energy consumption is difficult to understand intuitively because electricity is mostly invisible.

A microwave clock looks wasteful because we can see it glowing.

Meanwhile, much larger energy users operate so routinely that we barely notice them.

The air conditioner runs.

The refrigerator cycles.

The water heater keeps water hot.

Lights stay on in empty rooms.

Heated or cooled air escapes through poorly sealed windows, doors and insufficient insulation.

Those losses do not necessarily provide the same satisfying little action as pulling a plug from the wall.

But they can matter much more.

That realization changed the question I was asking.

Instead of:

“What can I unplug?”

I started asking:

“Where is most of my electricity actually going?”

That is a much better question.

If heating or cooling is responsible for a large portion of household energy use, then improving insulation, sealing drafts or making sensible thermostat adjustments can have far more impact than chasing a few watts of standby power.

If an old appliance is inefficient, replacing it when the time comes may produce savings that dwarf months or years of obsessively unplugging small electronics.

If inefficient bulbs are still being used frequently, switching to LEDs can reduce consumption without requiring a new daily ritual.

Even basic habits—turning off unnecessary lights, maintaining heating and cooling equipment, using sensible water-heater settings and paying attention to major appliances—can focus effort where meaningful consumption occurs.

None of this means standby electricity is imaginary.

It is real.

Across many devices and millions of households, small loads can collectively become significant. And some electronics draw considerably more standby power than my microwave did.

If a device is rarely used and easily unplugged, disconnecting it can make perfect sense.

A switched power strip can also eliminate standby consumption from several devices without requiring a daily expedition behind furniture.

But my experiment exposed a trap hidden inside a lot of well-intentioned efficiency advice.

Not every possible saving deserves equal attention.

There is a difference between saving energy and optimizing every last watt.

The first is useful.

The second can become exhausting.

Imagine spending months unplugging a microwave after every use while keeping the thermostat unnecessarily aggressive throughout summer.

Or carefully disconnecting phone chargers while incandescent bulbs illuminate rooms nobody is occupying.

Or worrying about a digital clock while heated or cooled air escapes continuously through obvious drafts.

The small action feels productive because it is visible.

The larger problem may remain untouched because fixing it requires more thought, money or planning.

That is what the microwave plug ultimately taught me.

Efficiency should be prioritized, not ritualized.

Start with the largest loads.

Look at heating and cooling.

Look at water heating.

Look at major appliances.

Look at insulation and air leakage.

Look at lighting that operates for long periods.

Then work downward.

Once the meaningful sources of consumption have been addressed, smaller standby loads can certainly be considered.

But reversing that order can create the illusion of progress.

I could unplug my microwave every day for a year and watch its standby consumption fall to zero.

Mathematically, that is a success.

Practically, I would have spent hundreds of moments plugging and unplugging an appliance to save roughly the cost of a small purchase over an entire year.

For me, the inconvenience wasn’t worth it.

So after two weeks, I stopped.

The microwave remained plugged in.

The clock stayed illuminated.

And instead of feeling guilty about those three watts, I redirected my attention toward household changes with a better return.

Thermostat settings.

LED lighting.

Insulation.

Efficient appliances.

Reducing unnecessary heating and cooling.

The experiment therefore saved me something I had not expected.

Not much electricity.

Attention.

It taught me to stop treating every watt as equally important.

There is also a broader lesson there.

Personal efficiency efforts often become focused on tiny behaviors because tiny behaviors are easy to control.

We like actions with immediate feedback.

Turn something off.

Unplug something.

Watch the meter fall to zero.

Done.

Bigger improvements are less emotionally satisfying because they may involve research, maintenance or upfront costs.

But if the goal is genuinely reducing electricity use rather than simply feeling disciplined, the numbers should decide where effort goes.

Measure first.

Prioritize second.

Then act.

My microwave used about three watts while waiting patiently for someone to heat leftovers.

I proved that unplugging it eliminated those three watts completely.

I also proved something more valuable:

Sometimes winning the battle against a tiny amount of wasted electricity can distract you from the much larger war happening elsewhere in the house.

So I left the plug alone.

The little clock continues to glow.

And now, instead of seeing three watts of failure every time I walk into the kitchen, I see a reminder.

Saving energy matters.

But knowing where to save it matters more.
