Her journey stretched from the tropical streets of Key West all the way to Copper Harbor in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, carrying her from one coast to the other. Along the way she met new people, experienced breathtaking landscapes, and slowly discovered that happiness didn’t require luxury—it required freedom.
By 2022, she was ready for an even bigger leap.
She settled deep within Arkansas’ Ouachita Mountains, choosing to build a life almost entirely off the grid. Far removed from crowded cities and constant noise, she embraced independence, simplicity, and a slower pace that allowed her to reconnect with nature.
Of course, she wasn’t making that journey alone.
Her growing family included several beloved cats and two loyal dogs, all of whom depended on her every day.
Caring for so many animals while building a homestead presented challenge after challenge. Yet Mama V approached every obstacle with patience and remarkable ingenuity. She gradually constructed a rabbit hutch, a chicken coop, storage sheds, and dedicated spaces for each of her animals. There were even periods when she lived without running water, adapting however necessary while continuing to move her dream forward one project at a time.
Still, one problem remained.
The little bus that had faithfully carried her across America was no longer large enough for both her and her expanding furry family.
Buying another home simply wasn’t an option.
Money was tight, and affordable alternatives were hard to find.
Then an unexpected act of kindness changed everything.
A nearby neighbor mentioned he had an old camping trailer sitting unused on his property. Rather than letting it continue to deteriorate, he offered it to Mama V completely free of charge.
For her, it felt like a miracle.
The trailer wasn’t beautiful.
In fact, she later laughed that her first impression was simply, “It’s ugly.”
Built in the early 1980s by NuWa and believed to have been used primarily as a hunting camper, it had clearly seen better days. The outside looked tired and neglected.
Inside was even more intimidating.
Hundreds upon hundreds of dead wasps covered the interior.
Dust, dirt, and years of neglect had settled into every corner.
Fortunately, the trailer had one major advantage.
Its structure remained solid.
There were no significant leaks, making it the perfect candidate for renovation instead of replacement.
Mama V didn’t tackle the challenge alone.
Friends Jayme and Kevin immediately stepped in to help. Kevin carefully hauled the camper to its new location, while Jayme undertook the enormous task of cleaning it from top to bottom.
She removed more than a thousand dead wasps before scrubbing every cabinet, wall, countertop, and floor until the neglected trailer began looking like a home again.
