I found this in my son’s room while cleaning.

The mystery vanished the moment the broom dragged it out from beneath the bed.

There, in the beam of light, lay the culprit: half of a pistachio shell, dusty, slightly stained, and utterly harmless. For a second, neither of us said a word. After all the anxiety, speculation, and worst-case scenarios our imaginations had invented, the truth seemed almost ridiculous.

Then the tension broke.

We burst into laughter—the kind that comes suddenly and uncontrollably when fear gives way to relief. Every ounce of dread that had built up over the past few minutes dissolved in an instant. What had seemed like a parasite, a dead creature, or some mysterious threat turned out to be nothing more than a forgotten snack hiding in the shadows.

Yet the experience stayed with me long after the laughter faded.

It reminded me how quickly the human mind fills gaps in understanding with fear. When we can’t immediately explain what we’re seeing, our imagination often rushes to the darkest possibilities. In the dim, uncertain space beneath the bed, a simple pistachio shell transformed into something far more alarming—not because it had changed, but because we lacked the context to recognize it for what it was.

The lesson was surprisingly simple: perspective matters.

Now, whenever I notice something strange lurking in a shadowy corner or encounter something I can’t immediately identify, I think back to that dusty pistachio shell. I still investigate. I still look twice. But instead of assuming the worst, I approach the mystery with a little more curiosity and a little less fear.

Sometimes the scariest things are nothing more than ordinary objects waiting for a closer look.
