Video shows armed citizen drawing his pistol and shooting back at the Idaho In-N-Out gunman

What began as an ordinary Saturday lunch at a brand-new In-N-Out Burger turned into a scene of unimaginable violence—and, according to witnesses, extraordinary courage.

Customers were ordering meals, employees were serving families, and the restaurant had been open for only one week when gunfire suddenly shattered the afternoon. Within moments, panic swept through the dining room and parking lot as people scrambled for cover, unsure where the shots were coming from or how long the attack would last.

Amid the chaos, witnesses say one armed civilian made a decision that may have saved countless lives.

Seeing the gunman continue firing, the man reportedly drew his handgun and returned fire, forcing the attacker into a gunfight that created precious seconds for terrified customers and employees to escape. Those brief moments, witnesses believe, allowed dozens of people to flee the restaurant before the violence could claim even more victims.

Chaos Erupts at the Restaurant

According to authorities, the shooting began at approximately 2 p.m. local time inside the In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, before the suspect moved outside into the drive-thru and parking lot.

Witnesses described scenes of confusion as people ducked beneath tables, ran for exits, or sought shelter behind vehicles while gunfire echoed across the property.

One witness, Lane Koehn, captured part of the incident from his vehicle. Speaking afterward, he said he saw the suspect carrying what appeared to be an AR-style rifle before noticing another man step forward with a handgun.

Rather than fleeing, the armed civilian reportedly confronted the shooter.

The exchange of gunfire unfolded in the parking lot as customers and employees rushed to safety.

Video recorded during the incident showed workers in their In-N-Out uniforms sprinting away from the building while others shouted warnings to those still nearby.

Desperate Efforts to Save the Wounded

As the shooting subsided, the focus immediately shifted from survival to rescue.

Koehn described seeing an In-N-Out employee suffering from a severe gunshot wound to the chest. According to his account, another employee dragged the injured woman across the parking lot in an effort to move her out of danger.

Koehn said he and the armed civilian remained with her, providing comfort and assistance until emergency medical crews arrived.

“She was pretty bad off, but I don’t know. I hope she made it,” he recalled.

The images left a lasting impression on everyone who witnessed them—ordinary people suddenly thrust into extraordinary circumstances, doing whatever they could to help complete strangers.

Victims and Investigation

Authorities later confirmed that two people were killed, including one In-N-Out employee who had been serving customers when the attack began.

At least five other people were injured, though officials continue to assess the full extent of their injuries.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks announced that the immediate danger to the community had ended and that shelter-in-place orders had been lifted. Investigators continue working to determine what led to the attack.

As of now, officials have not publicly released the suspect’s motive, and the investigation remains active.

A Company Mourns One of Its Own

The tragedy struck especially hard for In-N-Out Burger employees across the country.

Company President Lynsi Snyder confirmed that one of the victims was a member of the restaurant’s staff.

In a heartfelt statement, she expressed her grief over the loss of an employee who had been doing exactly what she came to work to do—serve customers.

She described the victim as one of the company’s “beautiful Associates” and mourned the senseless loss of a young life taken during an act of violence that forever changed a community still celebrating the opening of its newest restaurant.

Courage in the Midst of Horror

As investigators continue searching for answers, many witnesses remain focused on the actions of the armed civilian who intervened during the attack.

Authorities have not yet issued an official determination about the precise impact of his actions. However, several eyewitnesses believe his decision to confront the gunman disrupted the assault long enough for numerous people to escape.

Whether through the bravery of first responders, employees helping one another to safety, or ordinary citizens stepping forward in extraordinary moments, the tragedy also revealed acts of remarkable courage amid overwhelming fear.

For the families mourning loved ones, for the injured beginning long recoveries, and for employees who expected nothing more than another day at work, the events of that afternoon will never be forgotten. As the investigation continues, one hope unites the community: that the victims will be remembered not only for the violence that took them, but also for the courage, compassion, and selflessness shown by so many in the face of unimaginable danger.
