Apple cider vinegar has acquired the kind of reputation usually reserved for ingredients that promise to do almost everything.
A splash in water is said to transform digestion.
A little on the skin supposedly fixes blemishes.
And diluted through the hair, it is often described as a slow restorative treatment—something you can leave on overnight while its acidity quietly “rebalances” the scalp, dissolves buildup, smooths the cuticle, eliminates flakes, and sends you into the morning with shinier hair.
There is a sensible idea buried inside that story.
Leaving vinegar on your scalp all night isn’t necessarily it.
Apple cider vinegar is acidic. Hair and scalp also naturally exist in an acidic environment, and alkaline products or chemical treatments can affect the hair fiber. An appropriately diluted acidic rinse may therefore leave some people’s hair feeling smoother or looking shinier, particularly if it helps remove certain residues.
But “acidic” does not automatically mean “restorative.”
And more exposure does not automatically mean more benefit.
That’s the first thing worth understanding before turning a quick rinse into an eight-hour treatment.
Vinegar contains acetic acid.
Used undiluted—or in a mixture that is still too concentrated—it can irritate skin. Prolonged exposure can increase that opportunity, especially on a scalp that is already inflamed, scratched, sensitive, or affected by a skin condition.
If something stings, burns, or makes your scalp increasingly red, that is not evidence that the treatment is “working.”
