Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has earned a reputation as a go-to home remedy for everything from digestive health to skincare. Among its many claimed benefits, one of the most popular is its potential to reduce dandruff and improve scalp health. Countless people report positive results after adding ACV to their hair-care routine, often describing fewer flakes and less irritation. Despite these personal testimonials, scientific evidence supporting apple cider vinegar as an effective dandruff treatment remains limited. Even so, experts acknowledge that ACV may provide certain benefits for the scalp, which continues to fuel interest in this simple household ingredient.

One of the main reasons apple cider vinegar attracts attention is its potential role in creating a healthier scalp environment. Some experts believe it may help maintain the scalp’s natural pH balance, which could reduce conditions that contribute to irritation, dryness, and flaking. Others suggest that ACV may assist in loosening and removing dead skin cells that build up on the scalp over time. Research published in 2022 found that apple cider vinegar may help ease symptoms associated with dry scalp, including itching and visible flakes. Because dry scalp and dandruff often look similar, many people confuse the two conditions. However, dermatologists emphasize that they are caused by different underlying factors. As a result, while ACV may offer relief for some symptoms, there is currently no clear evidence proving that it effectively treats either condition at its source.

Another reason ACV has gained popularity is its antimicrobial activity. Studies have shown that apple cider vinegar contains compounds with both antibacterial and antifungal properties, leading some researchers to explore its potential role in supporting scalp health. Certain bacteria, including some strains of Staphylococcus, have been associated with scalp conditions that can resemble dandruff. In addition, fungal-related scalp issues are sometimes mistaken for dandruff because they can produce similar symptoms, such as itching and flaking. Because of these connections, some people believe ACV may help by limiting the growth of microorganisms that contribute to scalp irritation.

However, the science remains far from conclusive. Researchers note that apple cider vinegar’s effectiveness can vary significantly depending on the type of microorganism involved. While studies have found that undiluted ACV may be effective against certain bacteria, its impact on some yeasts and fungi appears to be much weaker, particularly at lower concentrations. For example, research suggests that apple cider vinegar is less effective against certain Candida species when diluted. These findings highlight an important point: although ACV shows some promising properties in laboratory settings, more research is needed before it can be recommended as a proven treatment for dandruff or other scalp conditions.

For individuals who want to try apple cider vinegar as part of their scalp-care routine, experts generally recommend using it in a diluted form rather than applying it directly to the skin. A commonly suggested mixture combines two parts apple cider vinegar with one part water. After gently applying the solution to the scalp, it can be left on for approximately 15 minutes before being rinsed thoroughly with warm water. This process is typically recommended no more than twice per week.

As with any home remedy, caution is important. People with sensitive skin, eczema, psoriasis, or existing scalp conditions should consider speaking with a healthcare professional before using ACV. If symptoms such as redness, burning, irritation, or increased discomfort occur, use should be discontinued immediately. While apple cider vinegar may offer supportive benefits for some individuals, current evidence does not support viewing it as a proven cure for dandruff. Instead, it is best considered a complementary option that may help promote overall scalp health when used safely and appropriately.
